Requirements
To earn the rating
- 12 years or older (ages 12–14 earn the Junior Master Scuba Diver rating)
- Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver (or equal from another agency)
- Five PADI Specialty certifications
- 50 logged dives, with your logbook as proof

Is Master Scuba Diver a class?
No. It’s a rating you earn by completing Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, five specialties and 50 logged dives. There’s no extra test.
How long does it take?
Anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on what you’ve already done and how often you dive.
Do my specialties from years ago count?
Yes. Any PADI Specialty certifications you hold count, no matter when you earned them.
Is Master Scuba Diver a professional rating?
No. It’s the top recreational rating. If you want to lead dives or teach, the next step is Divemaster.
